Piece of the "Old Poplar Tree". Tree is drawn on piece with the words "Old Poplar Rree Burned May 2, 1925(?)". This tree stood in Ashby's Gap, marking the point where the counties of Fauquier, Loudoun, and Clarke joined. In the presidential campaignaof 1844, a Henry Clay and Theodore Frelinghuysen flag (Republicans) was flown from the top of the tree. In 1923, after being burned, the "Old Poplar Tree" was finally destroyed when U.S. Highway 50 was built. |
